Safeguarding Policy

Safeguarding Policy

Angaza Center is committed to promoting the safety, dignity, and well-being of children, young people, and vulnerable adults who engage with its website, events, admissions process, classes, labs, mentorship, partner activities, and communications channels. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

Purpose and scope

  • This Policy applies to all safeguarding concerns arising in connection with Angaza Center’s operations, including online and offline learning, info sessions, mentoring, partner activities, media capture, communications channels, and facilities used by Angaza Center.

Guiding principles

  • The best interests, safety, dignity, and rights of the child or vulnerable person come first.
  • Concerns should be taken seriously, recorded promptly, and escalated without delay to the appropriate internal lead and, where required, to the relevant authority.
  • No one should suffer retaliation for reporting a genuine concern in good faith.

What safeguarding concerns may include

  • Physical, emotional, sexual, or psychological abuse, neglect, exploitation, grooming, bullying, harassment, coercion, inappropriate communications, online abuse, exposure to unsafe content, unsafe facility conditions, or misuse of images and personal data.
  • For digital programmes, this also includes unsafe one-to-one contact, inappropriate direct messaging, unauthorised collection or sharing of child data, cyber-bullying, sextortion, and unsafe use of learner images or testimonials.

Prevention measures

  • Use clear codes of conduct for staff, instructors, volunteers, partners, and learners.
  • Limit unnecessary one-to-one unsupervised interactions with minors, especially through private digital channels.
  • Use age-appropriate privacy settings, controlled access, moderation, and parent or guardian engagement where appropriate.
  • Obtain proper consent before capturing or publishing a child’s image, testimonial, or personal story.
  • Provide staff and instructors with safeguarding awareness and escalation guidance.

Safer communications

  • Official communication with learners should use approved channels wherever possible.
  • Private direct messaging with minors should be limited, justified, professional, and, where appropriate, visible to a parent, guardian, or designated staff member.

Reporting and response

  • If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services or the police without delay.
  • Any staff member, contractor, or volunteer who receives a concern should record the facts promptly, preserve relevant evidence, avoid investigating on their own, and escalate to the designated safeguarding lead or the most senior available responsible person.
  • Angaza Center should then assess immediate safety needs, decide what internal protective steps are required, and make any necessary external referral.

Confidentiality and records

  • Safeguarding information should be shared strictly on a need-to-know basis and stored securely.
  • Records should be factual, dated, and preserved carefully because they may later be needed for internal action, partner compliance, or external investigation.

Media and publicity

  • Children and vulnerable persons should not be identifiable in public-facing materials unless a proper consent process has been completed and the use is necessary and appropriate.
  • Sensitive details should never be published where they could create a safety risk, stigma, or unwanted attention.

Consequences and review

  • A safeguarding breach may result in immediate restriction from contact with learners, suspension from duties, removal from programmes or events, termination of engagement, and referral to relevant authorities where appropriate.
  • This Policy should be reviewed regularly, especially as Angaza Center expands cohorts, delivery modes, partner sites, and online platforms.
